This "new" video is a revelation as it captured Tim right during his indoctrination in the Universe in Disenchantment cult as evidenced by his wearing normal clothes and playing songs from his earlier albums (Gostava Tanto de Voce) as well as his new composition "Que Beleza" from the Rational album.

This video is pretty poor quality but has Tim playing a song each from his third and fourth LPs as well as a jam session with what appears to be Nana Vasconceles on Congas and Tim on drums.

Roberto Carlos Videos - 1960s

This one's kinda long, but what a treat to see Rio from this vantage point and it almost looks like Roberto is actually piloting the helicopter. This is from his 1967/68? film "Roberto Carlos em Ritmo de Aventura" (Roberto Carlos in the Rhythm of Adventure). Ah, to be a teen idol in late 60s Rio de Janeiro!

It looks like this one is from the same film, but I'm not sure. I love the set on the roof a sky-scraper and Roberto's cape is sooo tight!

Really cool version from the movie (I'm guessing) "Roberto Carlos e Diamante Cor de Rosa" that includes a slightly different version of this song which was also on the S/T 1969 album.

A live, but poor quality television performance of "Nao Vou Ficar" from 1971.

My buddy Greg mentioned this tune as being from the above mentioned movie, but doesn't appear on the soundtrack. Here we have Roberto, Erasmo and Wanderlea cruising around in a jeep singing this song, which translates "I need to know how to live." I repeat, to be a teen idol in late 60s Rio de Janeiro!

This is one of the more interesting music-related videos I've seen in quite awhile. I love the thoroughness of it and also the aesthetic of using a vinyl recording as the actual document that the video is both and about and composed of. Well done!

This is one of my favorite songs at the moment and I first really "listened" to it from this wonderful DVD put out by Trama in Brazil. When this is back in stock you can find it at Dustygroove. Having bought three of these Trama DVDs, this one is by far my favorite. Many of the other ones are from the 1990s, where this one was recorded right when her "Elis" album was coming out and featured many song from this album as well as the previous albums.

I also recommend the Cartola video, but here the director gets a bit too artistic for my tastes with many extremely shadowy extended shots of Cartola's hands or a box of matches used for percussion. And then there is the Tim Maia DVD, for Tim Maia diehard fans only. It's from 1992 and is logically the only one that Dustygroove has in stock. It's funny if only for Tim's meandering rants in between songs. Throughout most of it he looks like a besequined blimp over-singing every song he's every sung with a lot of slap-bass in the background.

"That's the Way of the World" Clips

The following three clips are from the 1975 feature film "That's the Way of the World." At this point the Earth, Wind & Fire soundtrack to the film is better known than the actual movie, which was out of print until recently (yours truly picked up a VHS copy off of eBay a few years back).

Actually, I had the EWF album for awhile before I noticed that it was a soundtrack to a movie. Then it was a few more years before I got my hands on the movie. It's not great, but it is interesting to see the recording industry portrayed in 1975 at the peak of its excesses. The movie follows Harvey Keitel, a producer, who is hoping to break his pet project, "The Group" (EWF), but instead gets saddled with producing a lame-O vocal group in the mode of the Carpenters, but far less musically interesting. Their song sounds like a demo for the Ren & Stimpy "Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy" song of many years later.

I have three clips here. The first is the title credits where "The Group" are tuning up and then recording the title song in the studio. The second clip is of "The Pages" song which is not so good but I like how the director, Sig Shore of "Superfly" fame, films the recording session to give the viewer a sense of how songs were recorded and produced. The final clip is of EWF playing at a roller disco. The sound and picture are a bit murky, but when else are you personally gonna see EWF performing at your nearest roller disco.

It was this movie and the occasional James Brown footage I would catch on VH1 or something that were formative to my "dance style," if you can call what I do a style. I was told by my significant other that I have a "goofy" dance, but then again an ex said that she thought I had a goofy dance until she saw some old James Brown footage and then she realized what I was doing. That's not to say that I dance like James Brown, but more like watching the "muppet babies" and thinking it was idiotic and then seeing the original "Muppet Show" and understanding how the muppet babies could exist. Goofy or not, Travolta has some serious moves in this clip that I have attempted to put in my repertoire in more drunken moments, such as the knee drop scoot across the floor move and the wipe the sweat off the brow move. Watch and learn.
